Download and install KanQual on Windows

Use the Windows installer for a regular installation with an application shortcut. The current Windows package targets x64 PCs.

These instructions use filenames from release v0.9.9, checked on October 15, 2026. When installing a newer release, substitute its version number and read its release notes.

1. Download the Windows installer #

Download from the official github.com/KanQual/kanqual repository. These builds are unsigned, so your operating system may ask you to approve the app. Approve only the KanQual file you intentionally downloaded; an unknown-publisher notice is different from a malware detection.

  1. Open KanQual’s latest GitHub release and expand Assets if the file list is collapsed.
  2. Download KanQual_0.9.9_x64-setup.exe. Choose the setup executable, not the portable ZIP or GitHub’s source-code archives.
  3. Save the file to Downloads and wait for the download to finish.

2. Approve the unsigned installer #

  1. Double-click the downloaded KanQual file. If Windows displays Windows protected your PC, choose More info.
  2. Check that the application shown is the KanQual file you downloaded. An Unknown publisher label is expected since the app is not registered with Microsoft.
  3. If you trust that download, select Run anyway to continue. This approves this launch; you do not need to turn off Microsoft Defender or SmartScreen.

If Run anyway is unavailable, your device may be enforcing Smart App Control or an organization’s application policy. Ask your IT administrator or contact the developer; these instructions do not bypass that policy. If a warning names malware rather than an unrecognized publisher, stop and report it.

3. Complete installation #

  1. Follow the setup wizard and choose a location you can write to.
  2. Allow setup to finish.
  3. Launch KanQual from its shortcut or the Start menu as your normal Windows user. Do not choose Run as administrator for the app itself.

4. First launch and troubleshooting #

Let the app initialize, then follow the account/setup prompts shown by the release.

If you get stuck, email mcansoy@fairfield.edu with your operating system, KanQual version, and exact error message. Remove research data and personal information from any screenshots.
